 P.1 Parents-Kid Reading Day Camp

On Saturday the 20th of October 2018, we had a super fun reading camp at Canossa school for the P1 students and their parents. The morning was filled with an abundance of fun activities, and a lot of reading. While the parents were listening to a presentation by Serah Ho about reading strategies, the students spent the morning in the English room.

They listened to the reading of Otto the Book Bear.Otto lives in a book and is happiest when his story is being read. Otto is no ordinary storybook character: when no one is looking, he comes to life! Otto loves to walk off of his book’s pages, but when his book is taken away while Otto is off exploring, the book bear sets off on a grand adventure to find a new home. The students were captivated by the charm of this beautiful book!

The students then listened to another story: Crunch the Crocodile. Crunch the crocodile was terribly greedy! All the other animals living in and around the river were afraid of him. But one day, they had a plan ... The students were enthralled with the book and experienced a range of emotions: from fear to wonder and at last, relief.

In keeping with the theme of animals, the students each made a beautiful animal booklet where they could draw, color and write about their favorite animals. Many of the students drew the characters in the books we read earlier and they had a lot of fun showing their teachers their drawings and writing.

Thereafter the students went back to the hall to find an array of tents set up, some even fitted out with flashlights, sleeping bags, snacks and books. They spent time with their parents reading books they brought or reading Raz-Kids ebooks on the provided tablets. It was great to see so many parents having fun reading with their children. The students and their parents made characters from their books with paper plates, colored paper, funny eyes and many other craft materials. There were princesses, crocodiles, frogs, ghosts and many more, as the characters in the books were brought to life. Students then had the opportunity to present their characters in a catwalk on the stage.

It was a wonderful day where parents and students could immerse themselves in the magical world of reading and we are all looking forward to another reading camp next year!

Comments about the English Reading Camp

What a wonderful learning journey Shavon and I have enjoyed at the English Reading Camp! Not only confined to story-telling, the Camp offered highly interactive learning to arouse Shavon’s interest to read and understand English stories. The excitement in preparation of different props for different characters and an invaluable moment of mother-child interaction reminded us that learning English could be so much fun! And, may I take this opportunity to thank the school teachers for encouraging Shavon to join the Camp!
